GENERAL SUMMARY

The staff meteorologist provides operational forecast support to meet the River Authority’s goals to expand flood services withing its jurisdictional boundaries and support corporate assets impacted by rain and/or floods.

Immediately report injuries for prompt diagnosis and treatment. 3) Make regular suggestions for safety process improvements to support continuous safety improvement.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Continuously tracks Doppler radar, satellite imagery, atmospheric models, river/stream water levels, and surface weather observation stations to identify flood risks due to rain events.
  • Analyzes models, historical, and statistical data. Maintain quality control on agency rainfall datasets. Conduct rainfall frequency analysis as needed.
  • Creates localized rain/flood forecasts for watersheds within the San Antonio River Authority district.
  • Leads River Authority’s storm monitoring team activation.
  • Supports watershed and parks operations, environmental sciences, and construction field crews with storm monitoring updates to ensure safety.
  • Coordinates with emergency response agencies during flood events.
  • Advises field teams on locating, maintaining, and troubleshooting field monitoring instruments (e.g. stream level stations, precipitation gauges, or soil moisture sensors).
  • Assists with post-event flood damage assessments and collect high-water mark data to support recovery efforts and future mitigation planning.
  • Communicates rainfall/flood impacts to River Authority staff and local emergency response agencies.
  • Works with National Weather Service and River Authority engineering teams to improve forecast accuracy and documentation of weather events.
  • Performs related work as required.

SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS

  • This position does not directly supervise any employees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education and Experience

  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science or a related discipline, and Five 5 years of progressively responsible experience understanding atmospheric processes at synoptic and mesoscale levels; or a combination of experience and education that results in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is required.

  • Professional Engineer in the state of Texas

  • Basic to intermediate skills in Python or Linux/Windows.
  • Proficiency in using weather modeling.
  • Proficiency with Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Proficiency with specialized software like AWIPS (Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System).
  • Operational meteorology, specifically in hydrology and emergency management contexts

  • Communicating orally and in writing to technical and non-technical audiences and stakeholders.
  • Critical thinking, analytical problem-solving, independent judgement, and the ability to identify and resolve complex engineering issues.
