Job Description

We are seeking a chemical engineer to own and execute the research and development of downstream processing and separations. This position will play a foundational role in defining GB's production strategy and requires a background in classical unit operations such as crystallization, ion-exchange, membrane filtration, carbon adsorption, electrodialysis, and more.

The ideal candidate will have experience developing processes from lab experimentation to pilot and demonstration deployment. This is a high-autonomy role requiring strong experimental judgment, disciplined execution, and the ability to collaborate effectively with other chemical engineers and external vendors to evaluate and design technologies from the benchtop.

As GB pursues vertical integration, you will have exciting opportunities to contribute towards end-to-end hardware and process solutions. We're looking for someone who thrives on heavy project ownership, ensures timely execution, manages independent work streams, and can align individual efforts with our broader vision.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify, design, and execute critical lab experiments with high rigor and precision, generating reliable and actionable data for unit operation design and scale up.
  • Evaluate competing technical pathways with autonomy, justifying key decisions using experimental results, process modeling, cost considerations, and scale-up constraints.
  • Become the team's subject matter expert on selected unit operations, leveraging available research, vendor insight, and your own experiments.
  • Develop a deep understanding of GB's chemical manufacturing process and aid in the design and optimization of our first-of-a kind pilot and demonstration plants.
  • Work closely with other chemical engineers to determine team priorities, help solve others' key problems, and communicate results and upcoming plans.
  • Simplify – determine what matters and what doesn't.

Required Qualifications:

  • BS, MS, or PhD in chemical engineering, chemistry, or a related field with 2+ years of relevant industry experience in process development
  • Elite laboratory experimentalist with strong background in separations unit operations (filtration, crystallization, ion-exchange, etc.) and their development
  • Proficiency in process modeling (sizing unit operations, constructing process flow diagrams and mass balances)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively to overcome technical challenges
  • Demonstrated ability to execute complex projects in parallel, meet aggressive timelines, and quickly change course as needed.

Additional preferred qualifications:

  • Background in analytical chemistry for quality control; familiarity with HPLC, IC, ICP-OES/MS, etc.
  • Hardware intuition: you're comfortable assembling, modifying, and troubleshooting lab and pilot-scale systems.
  • Prior experience with the design and development of bioprocess separations strategies, especially related to scale-up and process optimization
  • Practical mechanical and industrial site experience with pilot scale and larger bioprocess equipment and troubleshooting biological process plants
